Every now and then, you may want to make sure that a certain word is not in your search results. Fortunately, Google provides a simple way to do this through a standard search box. All you have to do to ensure that a word is not in your search results is to put a - in front of it.

As you may have noticed from an earlier post, I love Mexican food! Let’s say I want to find out a little bit more about salsa. If I type salsa into a search box, I get the following page of results:

Salsa With Dance

When you’re in the mood for learning about salsa, you really don’t feel like dancing! Trust me. Unfortunately, these results don’t really show me what I want. So, let’s try using the minus symbol in a search and see what happens! If I type salsa -dance into the search box, I get these results:

Real Salsa

Now we’re talking about Mexican food. Just what I wanted. By using the minus sign in front of the word dance, I was able to find what I really wanted.

Now you don’t have to wade through a bunch of search results when you see a common theme among the results that aren’t to your liking. All you have to do is put a minus sign in front of the common word, and you can get the results you want. The best part about it is that there is no limit on the amount of words that can have a minus sign in front of them! This will allow you to weed out literally millions of unwanted search results.
