Using Google to Search Wikipedia
If you’ve ever watched an episode of The Office, you know what an indispensable resource that Wikipedia can be in corporate America. With millions of articles on almost every imaginable subject, it can be pretty hard to find exactly what you’re looking for.
After a lot of headaches trying to use Wikipedia’s own search engine, I offer one simple piece of advice: Don’t use it! There is a much better way to find what you want to find on Wikipedia. All you have to do is use Google.
For example, let’s say you want to learn more about Arnold Schwarzenegger. Rather than do a web search, you know that you just want to find the Wikipedia article about Arnold. So, you head on over to Wikipedia and make your best attempt at spelling his name. You end up with something like this: Arnold Schwartzeneger. If you typed that in to Wikipedia and hit search, the following page would greet your frustrated eyes:
What do you do now? If you’re like me, you would probably be up for the challenge and keep hitting search and slowly modifying your spelling of his last name. This only ends in disappointment for me since I haven’t won a spelling bee in over 15 years.
Contrast that example with the following:
Head on over to Google and type Arnold’s name exactly like you typed it at Wikipedia. Only this time, just type wikipedia in front of his name. Hit search, and you will end up with a little something like this:
Not only does Google show you how to spell Arnold’s name, it does it without any frustration, and without calling you an idiot. You can also take comfort in the fact that there was a blogger out there who spelled Arnold’s name exactly like you did — a whole four years ago.
You’ll be amazed at the hours of frustration that you trim out of your life with this tip. This is the only way that I can search Wikipedia and be sure to find what I am looking for. Good luck!
