How to Install Google Toolbar 5 in Microsoft Windows Internet Explorer
This tutorial will teach you how to install the Google Toolbar Version 5 in Windows Internet Explorer. To start off, just head on over to toolbar.google.com. That link will open in a new window so you can refer back to this one while you install.
Step 1
We are going to go ahead and install the new Google Toolbar, which is Version 5. Technically this version is still in BETA, which means that it may not be stable, but I have been using it with no problems thus far. It has been out for several months now. By the way, Google uses the term BETA very liberally, since GMail is also still in BETA.
To continue, just click on the New! Try Google Toolbar 5 (BETA) link that is we highlighted with a hot-pink square in the screen shot above. If you don’t want the latest toolbar version, you can just click on the dark blue Install Google Toolbar button above and just jump straight to step 3.
Step 2
To continue, just click on the dark blue button that says Install Google Toolbar 5 BETA. You can’t miss it — it’s the one with the hot-pink highlighted square around it.
Step 3
Next, you will see Google’s Terms of Service. You can go ahead and read that if that kind of thing makes you happy.
Also, below the Terms of Service, you will notice three options under the Configure Your Toolbar heading.
- Set Google as default search in Internet Explorer and notify me of changes - This will make Google the default search engine in the search box that is located in the upper right-hand corner of Internet Explorer (it is not referring to the Google Toolbar search box since Google is always the default search engine in that box). Check this button only if you want Google to be the default search engine in Internet Explorer’s search box, which will replace Windows Live Search as the default.
- Set my home page to Google - Checking this option will make Google.com load up every time you open up Windows Internet Explorer. This is useful, as it gives you a default place to search and you can customize the Google homepage to your liking.
- Enable PageRank - PageRank is Google’s measurement of the importance of any given webpage on the internet. All webpages are ranked anywhere from 0 to 10, depending on how many pages link to that webpage (how Google determines page importance.) If you enable this, the Google Toolbar has to send the address you are currently surfing to Google’s servers requesting the PageRank of the page you are at. Some people view this as an invasion of privacy since Google can essentially track every page you visit. However, if you don’t enable it, you won’t be able to see the PageRank of the page you are at. You can click on the Learn More link to help you learn more about this feature.
Step 4
A box will pop up asking you what you want to do with the Toolbar installation file. Just click on Run, once again, outlined in hot-pink. This will not permanently store the Toolbar installation program to your hard drive, and is a good idea, since you won’t ever need it again after installation is complete.
Step 5
Internet Explorer will ask you if you really want to run this file. Since we know that this particular file is from Google, it is safe to install. Go ahead and click Run again.
You should now see a progress bar while Google Toolbar installs. Don’t worry, it won’t take too long!
Step 6
It is now necessary to restart Internet Explorer for the installation to complete. Go ahead and click Yes to restart now, or No if you would like to restart later.
After this step, your computer may take a few seconds to restart Windows Internet Explorer while the Google Toolbar performs some maintenance after installation. Be patient!
Congratulations - You’re Done!
Finally, Internet Explorer will open back up and show you a webpage that gives a brief overview of all that you can accomplish with the Google Toolbar.
Have fun with your new Google Toolbar. If you have any questions or comments about the new Google Toolbar, please write them in below.
