One of the new features that Google is testing out is currently Google Sets.  As of right now, it is found in Google Labs.  This designation means that it is something that the Google engineers are currently perfecting right now and are allowing the public to try.

How Google Sets Works

All you have to do is head on over to the Google Sets page and then type in one or more items that you want to match up with similar items.  For example, if you were to go to Google Sets and type in the colors green, blue, and yellow as shown below, Google Sets will recognize these words as colors and will return more colors in the results.

After clicking on Small Set, Google will show you a list of more colors:

If fifteen or so items isn’t enough for you, you can click on Grow Set and Google will return as many results as it deems relevant.  Here are the bottom ten results after clicking Grow Set.

Viewing a Large Set of Colors - Still a Work in Progress

As you can see, only 30% of these results can be reasonably called colors (olive, lilac, and chrome.)

How Is Google Sets Useful?

You may find that this is a neat trick, but nothing more.  However, the different ways that you can use Google Sets are almost endless.

Suppose you suffer from depression and have heard of a couple of antidepressants but want to find more.  You can easily type in a couple drugs and let Google do the rest.  For example, if you type in the antidepressants trazodone and bupropion, Google shows you similar antidepressant medications.

Here’s another example: Let’s say that you just moved into a new home and are wondering what kind of furniture you should buy.  All you have to do is type in a few furniture items and Google Sets will do the rest:
