How to Use Google to Check Sports Scores Live
When you type the name of a professional sports team into Google, you will automatically see the score of their current game if it is in progress, or the team’s schedule if they are not currently playing. This is a new feature that Google has recently implemented and it works for teams in the NFL, NBA, and NHL. When the regular season begins for Major League Baseball, Google will most likely implement this technology for the MLB as well.
Here are some screen shots so you can see how it works. Last Saturday night, I typed “detroit pistons” into a Google search box before their game with the Bucks and I got the following results:
As you can see, Google tells us the result of their past game, where they defeated the Miami Heat 93 to 90, and Google also lets us know that they will be playing tonight at 8:30 PM Eastern Time.
A few hours later, I typed “pistons” into a Google search box and saw that the Pistons were winning by two points in the first overtime. It’s interesting to note that you don’t need to type in the complete name of the sports team, usually just the franchise name works.
Unfortunately, Google usually lags a couple minutes on these scores. I had the live Game Center up on CBS Sportsline, and it showed the Pistons up 126 to 121. However, if you just want a quick peek at the score, then this is a nice, inconspicuous way to do it.
Below, you can see the results of typing “steelers” into a Google search box. Google shows you that the steelers finished the season at a respectable 12-4 mark and that last Sunday, they beat the Arizona Cardinals 27 to 23 in the Super Bowl.
If you’re into hockey, Google comes through for you as well. By typing any hockey team into the search box, you can view your team’s latest results.

My late father used to speak of a sports team called the “Howell Blind Ladies.” Using your shortcut suggestion, could I just type in “Blind Ladies” to get their latest sports scores?
Bony – I don’t think that will work. I haven’t heard of that team. Unless they are in the NFL, NHL, or NBA, I don’t believe that Google will find them.
Perhaps someday they will index more local teams, which is what I believe that you are referring to. Good luck!
