How to Use Google Maps to Get Directions to Kayak Across the Pacific Ocean
Recently, someone asked if Google can give you directions from one continent to another. They tried getting directions from Berlin to New York. Unfortunately, when you do this, Google tells you that it can’t calculate directions:

However, when you try to cross the ocean closest to Google’s headquarters, Google becomes much friendlier!
If you seek directions from Syndey, Australia to Los Angeles, California, Google tells you that it will take a while, but it is possible:
Here is a zoomable map illustrating this trip:
Why on earth does Google say that it is going to take over 55 days to make this journey?
Google wants you to get a little creative– in step 53 Google tells you to Kayak 5,404 kilometers of the choppy Pacific Ocean to get to Japan.
At least Google has some compassion and allows for a break from Kayaking in Japan. It might have actually been a little bit quicker to go straight to L.A. from Sydney in the ocean.
However, after a short stint in Japan, Google tells you in step #114 to hop into a river that flows into the Pacific and start kayaking again.
After 55 days, you will finally be in Los Angeles.
That’s a long time, but it can take longer if you tell Google that you want to make the trip by foot:
