How to Use Google Stock Screener to Pick the Perfect Stocks for your Portfolio

As we showed you last Wednesday, Google Finance is filled with amazing features, such as the ability to view charts of the major stock indices’ performance over a period of decades.  That article drew a pessimistic comment from one of our readers stating that we were just demonstrating another way to get depressed about the current economy.

However, with Google’s Stock Screener, you can easily choose stocks that are high performers, even in this current economic downturn.  It’s easy!  To use the Stock Screener, all you have to do is head on over to Google Finance at www.google.com/finance.

You will see the main page that looks like this:

I circled the link to Google Stock Screener in hot pink, so you can’t miss it at the top next to the “Get quotes” button.  Once you click the link, you will be taken to the Stock Screener as shown below:

Google Stock Screener HomepageAs you can see, there are a number of criteria that Google Stock Screener allows you to choose to pick your stocks.  The four default criteria are:

  • Market Capitalization
  • P/E Ratio
  • Dividend Yield Percentage
  • 5w Week Price Change

Additionally, if you click on the Add criteria link, the Stock Screener will show you an additional 60 metrics that you can use to evaluate potential stock purchases!

So what if you want to use Google Stock Screener to find stocks that performed well in the past year?  Look at what I did below:

Google Stock Screener with Stocks Screened that Doubled in the Past Year

I wanted companies that were at least valued a little over $10 Million, so I slide the slider bar to right around there ($13.3 Million to be exact).  My max capitalization I put in at $2 billion.

I didn’t want a stock that simply had a high price with no earnings, so I stuck to a reasonable ratio of between 30 and 40 (37.57 to be exact).

I really didn’t care if the stocks paid a good dividend — I just want to find the stocks that performed well in the past year regardless of divided.  While I didn’t change this field, I could have simply clicked the blue box with an X in it and deleted this criteria.

Lastly, I wanted to find stocks that had at least doubled in the past year.  Google Stock Screener showed me 9 stocks that met my criteria.

As you can see, Google Stock Screener allows you to hone in on the stock that performs exactly the way you want it to.  While past performance is no indication of future performance, these stocks obviously have something going for them.

Even in an economic downturn, not all stocks are depressing!
