How to Use Yahoo to Find Local Gas Prices

Last summer,we featured an article detailing how to use Google to find gas prices.  If you read that article, you will notice that it is kind of a pain in the neck to view gas prices in Google.  In the past year, Yahoo! has been busy rebuilding is brand.  Yahoo has incorporated many new features into its search engine, some may have been even better-implemented than Google’s features.

For example, it is much easier to find gas prices using Yahoo.  First of all, you don’t need to navigate into your preferences, it’s on by default.  Also, the gas prices show up right on top of the search results, rather than buried in the middle of the page like Google’s gas prices.

How to Find Local Gas Prices

All you have to do is go to the Yahoo Homepage and type in gas [your location here].  You can type in the city, city, state, or ZIP code.  Here’s an example:

Just by typing in gas, and the ZIP code, Yahoo returns the following results:

You can also type in the name of the city rather than the ZIP Code:

Another way to view the price of gas is to type in the city and state.  This is a good idea if the city that you want to check is pretty small.  Here, we check the price of gas in Rexburg, ID:

If you read our article about using Google to check gas prices, you will notice that we used the same three locations.  It is interesting to note that the price of gas in Rexburg was the most expensive of the three cities last summer, at over $4/gallon.  Now, it is the cheapest at under $2/gallon.

Conclusion

As you can see, it does seem to be a bit easier to check gas prices using Yahoo, rather than Google.  Although they both get their data from Gas Buddy, Yahoo displays it more prominently and doesn’t require you to change your preferences in order to view gas prices in the search results.

However, Google has always simply focused on web search.  As you can see from their homepage, they don’t focus on much else.  Yahoo, on the other hand has always liked to add a little bit of everything to their homepage.

Perhaps Google has disabled viewing gas prices by default for the sake of simplicity.  What are your thoughts?

Last year we showed how to find gas prices using Google. You can find the link in the article above. We were just contrasting Yahoo’s implementation with Google’s. We hope we didn’t offend you, but we strive to show people how to find the information they seek, independent of search engines.
