How to Automatically Open Google’s Search Results in a New Browser Window

July 21, 2008 · Filed Under Search Tips, Web Browsers · Comment

Have you ever visited a page in your search results only to find that it wasn’t what you were looking for?  Wouldn’t it be a lot easier if you didn’t have to hit the Back button, sift through more results, and then click another link hoping it contains what you want?

Well… You don’t have to!  Google has a nice feature that allows you to automatically open any search results that you click on in a new browser window.  Then, you can click on a few links you want and the pages will open up in new windows.

When you’re done clicking links, just go down to the taskbar and find the new windows that have opened.  If you don’t like the pages, just close the window and take a look at the next one instantly!

How Do I Make Google Open Search Results’ Links in a New Window?

All you have to do is go to the Google homepage and click on the preferenes link, as shown below.

Google Preferences

Next, scroll down to almost the bottom of the page and click on the check box that says Open search results in a new browser window next to it.

Don’t forget to click on the Save Preferences button at the bottom of the page before continuing.

Google Your Preferences Have Been Saved

Google will then alert you that your preferences have been saved and you will be taken automatically to the Google homepage to enjoy having the links to search results open automatically in new windows.

How to Clear Saved Searches and Form Data History in Firefox 3

July 14, 2008 · Filed Under Web Browsers · Comment

Many internet users get annoyed when they start typing in a Google search and the text box drops down with a list of everything they’ve ever typed in. If you ever want to get rid of that clutter that you’ve typed in days gone by, here’s how you can do it in Firefox 3:

Step 1

How To Clear Firefox Search and Form History Step 1

Open Firefox and click on Options, located under the Tools menu.

Step 2

The following window will open up:

How To Clear Firefox Search and Form History Step 2

At the top of this window, click on the Privacy tab (The fifth one from the left).

Step 3

You should see the following now:

How To Clear Firefox Search and Form History Step 3

Click on the Clear Now button, located in the bottom right corner of this window.

Step 4

A smaller window, entitled Clear Private Data will now pop up.

How To Clear Firefox Search and Form History Step 4

You can go ahead and uncheck everything here except for Saved Form and Search History. Then click, Clear Private Data Now.

Finished

Now, all of your saved search and form history is gone.

Making This Easier

There are two ways to make this process easier. One of them is to check the box next to Always clear my private data when I close Firefox in the options dialog, as shown below.

How To Clear Firefox Search and Form History Step 3

This does have a drawback, however. This means that every time you close Firefox, you will lose all of your private data. If you don’t want this to happen, you can leave the box unchecked. If you just want to delete your search history every time you close Firefox, you can click on the Settings button and you will see the following window:

Firefox Clear Search History Private Data Settings

If you only check Saved Form and Search History, and leave the box checked to clear the data every time you close Firefox, then you will only clear out the saved form data and search history every time you close Firefox.

Also, by only having this box checked, when you click on the Clear Now button, only the Saved Form and Search History will be checked which will save you the time of having to uncheck all of the other options you don’t want to be cleared each time you clear your private data.

If you have any questions, please post them below.

How to Install Google Toolbar 5 in Microsoft Windows Internet Explorer

July 10, 2008 · Filed Under Google Toolbar, Web Browsers · Comment

This tutorial will teach you how to install the Google Toolbar Version 5 in Windows Internet Explorer.  To start off, just head on over to toolbar.google.com.  That link will open in a new window so you can refer back to this one while you install.

Step 1

We are going to go ahead and install the new Google Toolbar, which is Version 5.  Technically this version is still in BETA, which means that it may not be stable, but I have been using it with no problems thus far.  It has been out for several months now.  By the way, Google uses the term BETA very liberally, since GMail is also still in BETA.

To continue, just click on the New! Try Google Toolbar 5 (BETA) link that is we highlighted with a hot-pink square in the screen shot above.  If you don’t want the latest toolbar version, you can just click on the dark blue Install Google Toolbar button above and just jump straight to step 3.

Step 2

To continue, just click on the dark blue button that says Install Google Toolbar 5 BETA.  You can’t miss it — it’s the one with the hot-pink highlighted square around it.

Step 3

Next, you will see Google’s Terms of Service.  You can go ahead and read that if that kind of thing makes you happy.

Also, below the Terms of Service, you will notice three options under the Configure Your Toolbar heading.

  1. Set Google as default search in Internet Explorer and notify me of changes - This will make Google the default search engine in the search box that is located in the upper right-hand corner of Internet Explorer (it is not referring to the Google Toolbar search box since Google is always the default search engine in that box).  Check this button only if you want Google to be the default search engine in Internet Explorer’s search box, which will replace Windows Live Search as the default.
  2. Set my home page to Google - Checking this option will make Google.com load up every time you open up Windows Internet Explorer.  This is useful, as it gives you a default place to search and you can customize the Google homepage to your liking.
  3. Enable PageRank - PageRank is Google’s measurement of the importance of any given webpage on the internet.  All webpages are ranked anywhere from 0 to 10, depending on how many pages link to that webpage (how Google determines page importance.)  If you enable this, the Google Toolbar has to send the address you are currently surfing to Google’s servers requesting the PageRank of the page you are at.  Some people view this as an invasion of privacy since Google can essentially track every page you visit.  However, if you don’t enable it, you won’t be able to see the PageRank of the page you are at.  You can click on the Learn More link to help you learn more about this feature.
Once you are done, you can click on the Accept and Download button to begin installation of the Google Toolbar.

Step 4

A box will pop up asking you what you want to do with the Toolbar installation file.  Just click on Run, once again, outlined in hot-pink.  This will not permanently store the Toolbar installation program to your hard drive, and is a good idea, since you won’t ever need it again after installation is complete.

Step 5

Internet Explorer will ask you if you really want to run this file.  Since we know that this particular file is from Google, it is safe to install.  Go ahead and click Run again.

You should now see a progress bar while Google Toolbar installs.  Don’t worry, it won’t take too long!

Step 6

It is now necessary to restart Internet Explorer for the installation to complete.  Go ahead and click Yes to restart now, or No if you would like to restart later.

After this step, your computer may take a few seconds to restart Windows Internet Explorer while the Google Toolbar performs some maintenance after installation.  Be patient!

Congratulations - You’re Done!

Finally, Internet Explorer will open back up and show you a webpage that gives a brief overview of all that you can accomplish with the Google Toolbar.

Have fun with your new Google Toolbar.  If you have any questions or comments about the new Google Toolbar, please write them in below.
